Russia and Israel are at risk of having their bids to host Euro 2020 rejected as a result of the political tensions in the countries.
Uefa has released its evaluation of the various bids involved in the tournament which will be spread across the continent for the first time in the competition’s history, a concept originally proposed by president Michel Platini. Of the 19 submitted presentations, 13 will be awarded the right to host at least three group stage fixtures.
But while some bids have been given mixed reviews due to the nature of the stadia, facilities or questions over the economic backing, those for St Petersburg and Jerusalem could be overlooked due to political difficulties.
Russia and Ukraine are currently at the centre of ongoing conflict regarding the region of Crimea, while difficulties continue between Israel and Palestine as part of wider Arab-Israeli tensions.
“The Israeli political situation is described in the bid as complex, an assessment confirmed by independent institutions,” the Uefa evaluation says of the Jerusalem submission.
It goes on to say of Russia’s bid: “The political, economic and football structures are sound, with very strong financial and governmental commitment. The overall political situation is described by institutions such as the World Bank as increasingly complex.”
St Petersburg’s Zenit Arena, which is currently under construction, will be one of the 12 stadiums used at the 2018 World Cup to be held in Russia.
The final decision on hosting rights for Euro 2020 will be announced on September 19, with London and Munich in the running to hold the semi-finals and final.
