<strong>How will the Reds react to derby disappointment?</strong></h3>
They weren't beaten on Saturday, but Phil Jagielka's last minute exocet was like a <a href="http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/sport-opinion/john-aldridge-evertons-derby-sucker-7852142">knife through red hearts.</a> Liverpool's players trudged off the pitch afterwards, heads bowed and shoulders slumped as if in defeat.<br />
<a href="http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/brendan-rodgers">Brendan Rodgers</a>
 must now pick them up and convince them that the Everton captain's bolt
 from the blue was exactly that, and that the Reds were more than worthy
 victors on the day.<br />
The Reds are three games without a win in the
 Premier League, but attention must turn to the Champions League now, 
and they face a vital game with Basel.<br />
They must find a way to get
 a result in Switzerland. Beating Basel could be key to qualifying for 
the next round. Rodgers men will surely be eyeing an away win over 
Ludogorets to go with their 2-1 victory at Anfield, and Real Madrid are,
 quite rightly, expected to go on and win the group. Second place could 
be a toss up between the Swiss champions and the Reds, get a result on 
enemy territory, and Liverpool can feel confident of qualification.<br />
Lose, and Group B will start resembling Everest.<br />
Liverpool
 played well on Saturday, not exceptionally, but they looked better than
 they have since the win over Tottenham in August. The ball was moved 
well, <a href="http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/jordan-henderson">Jordan Henderson</a> and <a href="http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/steven-gerrard">Steven Gerrard</a> dominated in midfield and <a href="http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/adam-lallana">Adam Lallana</a> turned in his best performance since his move to Anfield.<br />
Meanwhile <a href="http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/mario-balotelli">Mario Balotelli</a> was a thorn in Everton's side all afternoon and Liverpool's defence looked solid.<br />
The
 Reds must repeat the performance in Switzerland. They have the quality 
to get on the ball and control the game against Basel, but they will 
also find, just as they did against Ludogorets, that teams at this level
 are tactically sound and technically good. It certainly won't be easy 
for Liverpool and they must find a way to impose their qualities, such 
as pace and power, on a disciplined side.<br />
They certainly can't go into the game feeling sorry for themselves.<br />
The last time Liverpool travelled to Basel needing a result was in November of 2002. They ended up 3-0 down within half an hour.<br />
Gerard
 Houllier's side battled back to make it 3-3 that day but it still 
wasn't enough. The Reds must avoid similar disappointment this time 
around.<br />
Picking them up from Saturday's shock is a decent starting point.<br />

With no Champions League football and domestic cup action not until the new year, a lack of games has culminated into a rather interesting thirst for football in this post-Ferguson era. It must be the one upside of Manchester United either not being that good any more, or us just not knowing whether they are good any more. If it’s the latter, the next game is what you desperately need to make your mind up. Three points can calm you for a week, but one point or none at all has you counting down to an ordinary league game — <em>of which they are 38!</em> — as if it’s a much-needed holiday.</div>

September has been good for that. The 4-0 win over Queens Park Rangers was your typical “so <em>what </em>were you saying?” game, but the implosion at Leicester, from 3-1 to 3-5, confirmed all of our worst fears (for six days). It’s fickle, yes. Oddly enough, though, the excruciating wait was a nice reminder of why we dedicate an unhealthy portion of our lives to this. So edging past West Ham to win 2-1 was pretty satisfying – and a good note to end the month on.</div>

There’s always been a ‘must win’ feeling around any game, but, apparently, now more than ever. Along with little to cling onto in midweek, there are the harsh lessons taught by David Moyes. It probably explains the overreaction that followed the drubbing of QPR, but who wasn’t caught up in it all? It’s not as if an easy fixture has guaranteed maximum points for United in the last 14 months. And, more importantly, it marked a new era — one that, from afar, looks in better shape than the last. Angel di Maria carried on from where he left off at Real Madrid, Daley Blind was a reassuring presence in this ‘defensive midfield’ position, and Ander Herrera looked like he’d been at the club five years. With Louis van Gaal looking on, and with the power to summon <em>Radamel Falcao</em> from the bench, again: who wasn’t caught up in it all?</div>

Leicester City weren’t. All that good work, so similar to what we saw against QPR, was undone after an hour. The defence imploded, Leicester rallied (with some help from the officials, but no excuse) and it appeared that the previous week was a false dawn. Remember, there were a lot of false dawns last season. West Ham might be the second of this campaign, a game seemingly demonstrating that United can indeed defend as well as attack. Thus Paddy McNair’s late, match-saving headed clearance was the highlight, the Northern Irishman drafted in for his debut because his side were without four players. Looking at the names of those crocked, maybe we could have all been a little less surprised. Elsewhere, Herrera delivered again, along with players like Rafael and Robin van Persie showing their worth in style.</div>

Not much needs to be said about Wayne Rooney’s red card, though, except that this ‘new’ United seem intent on making football as agonising as possible. Depending on the result, that’s not always a bad thing.</div>

<strong>Player of the month: </strong>Ander Herrera should have awards given to him for being an influential midfielder and Rafael for simply being Rafael. But September belongs to Angel di Maria, who deserved to be on the winning side after his goal at Leicester.</div>

How bad must the Turkish side have been, though, considering that a midfield of David Bellion, Eric Djemba-Djemba, Kleberson and Ryan Giggs (well …) were far too strong for them. In the league, a Mikael Silvestre double was enough to see off Liverpool and United ended September in 5th place.</div>

Manuel Pellegrini’s Man City side may have shown excellent resolve to regroup themselves during a frantic 4-2 victory over <a class="word-link" href="http://talksport.com/football/hull-city" title="Hull City">Hull City</a> at the weekend, but the Chilean knows that they can ill afford the same sort of slip ups against a very good <a class="word-link" href="http://talksport.com/football/roma" title="Roma">Roma</a> side on Tuesday evening.<br />

City were perhaps a little unfortunate not to sneak a point from 
their opening round clash with Bayern Munich, and next for the Premier 
League champions is the visit of Serie A giants Roma, who arrive buoyed 
from a comprehensive win over <a class="word-link" href="http://talksport.com/cska-moscow" title="CSKA Moscow">CSKA Moscow</a>.<br />

Clearly not adverse to rotating his players, Pellegrini will need to 
get the recipe right on Tuesday evening or risk handicapping his side as
 they look to progress from the group stages for the second time in 
their history.<br />

The likeliest change looks to be that of goalkeeper Joe Hart for Willy Caballero. Hart was outstanding against <a class="word-link" href="http://talksport.com/football/bayern-munich" title="Bayern Munich">Bayern Munich</a>,
 but found himself relegated to the bench against Hull, a move he 
admitted as frustrating, but with Pellegrini admitting to the gravity of
 Tuesday’s match, it is expected that he will turn to the England man.<br />

Ahead of him also presents something of a dilemma for the City boss, 
especially following Eliaquim Mangala’s horror show performance at the 
weekend. That may have cost the Frenchman a starting spot against Roma, 
leaving Martin Demichelis as the likeliest selection alongside captain <a class="word-link" href="http://talksport.com/vincent-kompany" title="Vincent Kompany">Vincent Kompany</a>.<br />

City know that chances and goals will be needed if they are to take 
the initiative in this clash, so could result in a system that utilises 
two main attackers, rather than the target man approach used against 
Bayern.<br />

Stevan Jovetic has been confirmed as being named in the squad, but we suggest that will mean Edin Dzeko and <a class="word-link" href="http://talksport.com/sergio-aguero" title="Sergio Aguero">Sergio Aguero</a> will be reunited, as per the weekend, with widemen around them.<br />

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart wants to play every game</h3>
Manchester
 City goalkeeper Joe Hart says he sees no benefits in manager Manuel 
Pellegrini's decision to rest him for the last two domestic games ahead 
of tonight's Champions League tie with Roma and has declined to discuss 
the fact that he has not been offered a new contract.<br />
Sitting next
 to Pellegrini at yesterday's press conference, Hart – whose fine 
display in City's opening match at Bayern Munich matched performances at
 Real Madrid and at home to Borussia Dortmund in the past three seasons –
 was twice offered the chance to discuss the "positives" of being rested
 in favour of Willy Caballero for City's last two matches – the 7-0 
League Cup defeat of Sheffield Wednesday and Saturday's 4-2 league win 
at Hull City.<br />
"Of course I want to play every game, that is my 
nature, my professionalism," he initially said. "I am not the manager, 
just a player. I live by the decisions of the manager."<br />
But 
pressed on the "positives," of being rested, he added: "It is hard for 
me to see it that way. I am sure when I retire from football I will see 
them but right now I am not going to see them."<br />
It was an an 
awkward press-conference moment and another one followed when Hart 
passed up the opportunity to discuss the prospects of him signing a new 
contract "soon" and instead turned to Pellegrini, sitting to his right, 
to encourage an answer.<br />
"Me and Joe know what happens with that 
issue," Pellegrini said. "It is important to know how to manage it, but 
it is not the most important thing now." Asked how he responded, Hart 
muttered something unintelligible. Asked to repeat it, he said: "The 
same."<br />
The sense from within the club is that City anticipate no 
problems in agreeing new terms with Hart, despite the fact that his own 
current contract is now entering its final two years, while Vincent 
Kompany, Samir Nasri, Edin Dzeko, David Silva and Sergio Aguero have 
been given new deals. However, the 27-year-old said that he was ready to
 meet the challenge of battling Caballero for a place in the team.<br />
"We
 have always had good goalkeepers since I have been here: going back to 
David James, [Andreas] Isaksson, Kasper [Schmeichel], Shay Given, 
[Costel] Pantilimon, Stuart Taylor – it has always been a fight for me 
to keep my place and that will continue."<br />
Pellegrini indicated 
ahead of tonight's game that reaching the quarter-finals – rather than 
lifting the Champions League trophy – is City's aim this season and that
 he will not jeopardise the club's Premier League campaign by making the
 tournament his club's be-all and end-all.<br />
"If we can fight for 
the Premier League title and get further in the Champions League, that 
would be progress," said the Chilean, whose side were eliminated by 
Barcelona in the last-16 last year. "But if we have to leave behind the 
Premier League to win the Champions League, then for me that isn't 
progress.<br />
"It's important to progress in the Champions League, but
 not by forgetting the domestic league. We won't focus all we have on 
the Champions League and see what happens in the Premier League."<br />
Tonight,
 City will seek to win an opening home game in the group stage for the 
first time in four attempts against a Roma team who have won their 
opening six games in Serie A and the Champions League.<br />
Pellegrini,
 who will again be without the defensive midfield presence of Brazilian 
Fernando while restoring Stevan Jovetic to the squad, also said that 
City's French midfielder Samir Nasri has undergone groin surgery and 
will be out of action for a month.<br />

Diego Costa's Chelsea deputies have a lot to learn</h3>
Jose
 Mourinho is back in Portugal tonight, as he chases his third European 
Cup, but trying to find a way to win without his most important player 
in that quest.<br />
Chelsea spent £30m on Diego Costa this summer, 
hoping he would be the man to make the difference after narrowly missing
 out on the Premier League and Champions League titles last season.<br />
Everything
 that Costa has done so far – scoring eight goals in six league starts –
 has suggested that he can be that decisive influence, even more so than
 the brilliant Cesc Fabregas.<br />
Except for one issue: Mourinho does 
not believe that Costa's hamstrings allow him to play three matches each
 week and so tonight, away at Sporting Lisbon, he may be rested in 
favour Loic Remy.<br />
Costa has two deputies in £10.5m summer signing 
Remy and club legend Didier Drogba, but only Remy and Costa have 
travelled to Lisbon and neither the Frenchman nor the Ivorian have shone
 in their starts so far this season. Costa is first choice and the other
 two need to catch up.<br />
Mourinho admitted, in the aftermath of 
Chelsea's 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa on Saturday (Costa started and 
scored, naturally), that this side is "made to play with Diego", and 
having a different striker up front requires some recalibration of the 
type that will be needed at the Estadio Jose Alvalade this evening.<br />
"If
 Diego can play, I play Diego," Mourinho explained. "The team had a 
pre-season with him. The team worked with him a lot of times. He's 
playing with us every match in the Premier League. So the team, at this 
moment, is more made to play with Diego.<br />
"I think Remy's learning 
how to play with us. Didier is learning how to play again in a top 
competitive situation. So I would prefer to play Diego, but I'm happy 
with Didier and Remy, if I have to start with them, no problems."</div>

<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">His agent asked him if he was willing to play abroad.  club was then coached by the great Ottmar Hitzfeld and Lambert had

 played 44 games for Dortmund in his only season there and they reached 
the Champions League Final in Munich, where they played the Juventus, 
the holders. </span><br />
<b><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Lambert made the first goal and marked Zidane out of the game and Dortmund won 3-1. </span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Then
 Celtic signed him and he played there for seven years. He captain 
Celtic in the 2003 Uefa Cup Final in Seville where they took Joe 
Mourinho’s Porto into extra time before losing 3-1 after having a player
 sent off. </span><br />
<span style="color: red;"><b><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">At that time I used to write about football for <i>The Scotsman</i>, <i>90 Minutes</i> and <i>FourFourTwo. </i></span></b></span><br />

talking to an influential agent in the Midlands, I got to know a lot 
about what was really going on inside many clubs, most of which was

<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">And I became quite pally with Ray Wilkins, Chris Waddle, Darren Anderton and Mark Draper. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Only
 two players ever asked where I got their phone number: Keith Curle and 
David Ginola. My reply to both was, “From another journalist.” </span><br />
<b><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">One day I had to get hold of Paul Lambert, so I sent a fax to Dortmund. </span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Later
 on that afternoon I realised I’d blown it. This was an international 
week and I should have realised that Lambert would not be in Germany.  
Damn! He would have flown to Glasgow, where Scotland had a home game. I 
cursed my stupidity, my inability to get the basics right. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">But at 6.30pm the phone rang. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">“Is that Myles Palmer?” </span><br />

Yes, Hugo Lloris makes sense if you're going to stipulate the captaincy with preferences such as playing consistently and being a top performer. Is he captain material? Yes, you can't help but respect him as a player. Is a goalkeeper the best choice? That depends on what the expectancy of a modern day captain is meant to be. Lloris will no doubt shout and command and do what he does to defend his goal regardless of the armband. He leads by example but won't be able to stroll around the centre of the pitch shouting out instructions to outfield players pushing forward. Still, it's good enough for a keeper to be the captain of the French national side. Just not for Spurs. Second choice, only after an arm-wrestle with Adebayor.</u></span></div>

Then again, would you be content with Jan Vertonghen who hasn't had the opportunity to impress Mauricio Pochettino? Is he more likely to scream and instruct than Kaboul?</u></span></div>

The concern is that Michael Dawson was also vocal but he wasn't the best defender. Is that contradiction hurtful to the armband? What with the neat collection of centre-backs we now have in our squad you would think that by virtue of being made captain he's guaranteed a starting role. Jose Mourinho expects Eden Hazard to commit
 his long-term future to Chelsea after revealing the Belgium playmaker 
is discussing a contract extension.</div>
Hazard, 23, signed for a 
reported £32 million (Dh190.4m) from Lille in 2012 and has become an 
increasingly influential figure in his two years at Stamford Bridge.<br />
Hazard
 has three years to run on his current deal, but Mourinho believes 
Chelsea will tie him down in a bid to hold off continued interest from 
Paris Saint-Germain.<br />
“We have big hopes that he will go from a top
 player to reach higher levels,” said Mourinho, speaking on the eve of 
the Champions League Group G opener with Schalke.<br />
“He’s a player we want to keep. It’s true Chelsea is trying to have an agreement for a new contract.<br />
“It will be a question of time. It will end with a new contract.<br />
“He wants to commit to us and we want to commit to him for the future.”<br />
Didier Drogba has shrugged off an ankle injury to be in contention after taking part in training on Tuesday.<br />
The striker was the only injury concern after missing Saturday’s Premier League win over Swansea City.<br />
The final act of Drogba’s first spell was scoring the decisive penalty in the 2012 European Cup final win.<br />
Mourinho
 won the 2004 Champions League with Porto and the 2010 tournament with 
Inter Milan and is bidding to be the first manager to lift the trophy 
with three different clubs.<br />
He said: “Do I want to try to win it again? Of course.<br />
“What drives me is to try to win. I work for my club, for my players and for the club supporters. I don’t work for myself.<br />
“If
 I win it once more, to win with three clubs is unique. But even if I 
don’t do it, how many top managers in the world have only one or even 
not a single one?<br />
“The greatest in our country (Sir Alex Ferguson), he won it twice.<br />
“If
 at the end of my career I’ve achieved that situation, then good, but 
it’s far from being an obsession and it’s not something that I think 
about a lot.<br />
“I have the ambition to win it again, but in this moment I only think about don’t play Europa League.<br />
“We have a championship of six matches and three opponents (in Group G) and we have to do everything to qualify.”<br />
Chelsea,
 who also face Sporting Lisbon and Maribor, reached the semi-finals last
 term, losing to eventual runners-up Atletico Madrid, and finished third
 in the Premier League.<br />
After beginning the domestic season with 
four wins from four, hopes are high and Mourinho thinks he has a 
stronger squad this term.<br />
He said: “It’s not easy to improve what we did last season. In spite of that I think we are a better team.”<br />
The
 team has had the unfamiliar presence of Petr Cech on the substitutes’ 
bench after a decade in the first team, with Thibaut Courtois displacing
 him as first-choice goalkeeper.<br />
Mourinho declined to reveal who would start in goal, but insisted he has not designated competitions for his goalkeepers.<br />
“Don’t
 be surprised if he (Cech) plays a Champions League game or a Premier 
League game, or if Courtois plays a League Cup game,” Mourinho said.<br />
“What
 I don’t do is this competition is for me and this competition is for 
you. I must make choices. Petr is more than ready to play every game.<br />

 £24 million for Robin van Persie in August 2012, eyebrows were raised 
because of the Dutch striker's advancing years and checkered injury 
record. Not to mention the fact the Red Devils didn't appear to require 
another forward; they had more pressing concerns, such as recruiting a 
new top-class central midfielder, after all.</strong><br />

Ferguson wouldn't usually have given the green light to such a deal -
 but Van Persie was the Premier League's best striker at the time and 
Manchester United had been beaten to the title months earlier by local 
rivals Manchester City by virtue of goal difference.<br />

Keen to make sure that wouldn't happen again, and knowing this would 
be his final season in charge of the Red Devils, Ferguson went all in 
and brought Van Persie to Old Trafford - fully aware, surely, that 
within a few seasons the striker would have entered the early stages of 
decline.<br />

 the Blues are getting ready to announce the deal with Hazard in a deal 
worth £200,000-a-week. That figure would reportedly make the 23-year-old

Mourinho went as far to say that the club were in talks with the 
player, but believes they will not be ready to confirm a deal until next
 month. He is, however, confident that an agreement will be reached.<br />

 "He is a player we want to keep. It's true Chelsea are trying to have 
an agreement with him over a new contract, and that he wants to stay. 
It's a question of time. One more month, he'll have a new contract."<br />

<strong>Best of his generation</strong><br />

Hazard has become a vital player for Chelsea since joining from Lille
 in 2012 in a £32 million deal. He took home the PFA Player of the Year 
award last season to prove his worth. The fact that he was also awarded 
the Young Player of the Year award is testament to how good he can be.<br />

For Mourinho, Hazard could not just be a world-class player, but one 
of the best in his generation. It is for this reason Chelsea have valued
 him so highly. He even went as far as to compare him to Real Madrid and
 France legend Zinedine Zidane.<br />

Mourinho said: "Eden means a lot to us because he's a fantastic 
player. We are seeing day by day his motivation to work hard and 
improve.<br />

We want that, because his talent allows him to go from being a top player to one of the greats of his generation."<br />

<strong>Zidane </strong><strong>comparison</strong><br />

On Hazard taking the No.10 shirt in the summer, Mourinho said: "Can 
he be another Zinedine Zidane? The first point to compare is the size!<br />

"To have that ambition is good. I like that. I don't care about 
shirts and numbers. The players decide, they ask, they change. The ones 
with more years at the club obviously have the right to choose."<br />

<strong>Criticism</strong><br />

The praise is farflung from what Mourinho had to say about the 
Belgium international last season. The Chelsea boss was quick to 
criticise the player when the chips were down, questioning his work 
rate. With PSG and Real Madrid both reportedly interested, it was 
suggested that Mourinho could cash in on the star in the summer.<br />

However, Mourinho has been impressed with Hazard's improvement since that initial criticism.<br />

He said: "Even last season that was changing.<br />

"It was a big evolution from the Hazard I met when I arrived. He was 
changing. He was a kid who always lived on his natural talent, which is 
amazing. But he started to have some tactical education, mental

Chelsea have confirmed via their website that Ango-Nigeria forward 
Dominic Solanke has signed professional terms with the Stamford Bridge 
outfit.<br />

Solanke, a part of Chelsea pre-season team this summer, was unable to 
sign professional terms with Chelsea due to his age but upon turning 17 
on Monday he put pen to paper on a professional deal for an undisclosed 
number of years rumoured to be around five years.<br />

An excited Solanke also took time to announce via social media of his 
first professional deal with the Blues with a picture of him putting pen
 to paper on the deal flanked by his family.<br />

The England youth international still eligible for Nigeria at senior 
level is one of the most highly rated young forwards in England and 
Chelsea deserves huge credit for getting him secured on his first pro 
deal at the club.<br />

His chances of getting games in the first team this season look bleak 
but there is ample opportunity for him to grab Jose Mourinho’s attention
 in the youth ranks.<br />

However, Mourinho admits history will judge him as the one at fault if 
Solanke and two other Chelsea teenagers don't become fully fledged 
internationals in the future.<br />

Viva Ronaldo! – United Must Seize Any Chance to Sign Our Former Superstar

recent article on why Ronaldo’s signature should be avoided, Kevin 
Levingston extols the virtues of bringing our former hero home.</em></strong><br />

In an extremely well-reasoned <a href="http://cantheyscore.com/2014/09/16/viva-ronaldo-united-must-seize-any-chance-to-sign-our-former-superstar/cantheyscore.com/2014/09/15/cristiano-why-united-should-pass-on-ronaldo-2/" target="_blank" title="article">article</a>, fellow <em>CanTheyScore</em>
 contributor James has recently argued that the negatives of re-signing a
 certain Mr Ronaldo would outweigh the positives. Whilst I agree that 
this is a move which could have some negative repercussions; on a basic 
level I believe it is an opportunity too valuable to pass up. Put 
simply; Manchester United must sign Cristiano Ronaldo if he’s available.
 Below I will directly address some of the points James has made as well
 as share my own thoughts on the situation.<br />

First things first, one of the most prevalent sentiments being shared
 across social media and in United circles is a concern about Ronaldo’s 
age. The former Red turns thirty in February and many would have you 
think that this would indicate his immediate decline and de facto end of
 his career. Logic would dictate that this is far from true. One does 
not go from arguably the best player in world football to “past it” 
overnight. For the past ten years Ronaldo has been a supreme athlete and
 there is little to suggest that this dedication to personal 
conditioning would relax once he turns thirty. If anything, the 
Portuguese forward owes his ascent to the top of the game to his 
complete dedication to self-improvement. If there were ever a player 
capable of standing the test of time (or adapting his game) in the vein 
of Giggs, Totti or Maldini it’s Cristiano Ronaldo  There are 
understandable fears over the condition of his knee(s) but if there were
 any issues there they would be picked up in the standard pre-transfer 
medical checks.  In terms of overall quality a thirty year old Ronaldo 
will still be among the top players in the world, let alone at Old 
Trafford.<br />

One of the main discussion points has also been his character. Few 
can deny that Ronaldo comes with quite the opinion of himself which can 
often manifest on the pitch with displays of petulance or frustration at
 decisions made by his team-mates. I completely take James’ point on 
this and accept that it’s part of the forward’s game that sometimes 
leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Equally so; his “look at me” goal 
celebration in last year’s Champions League final upon scoring the far 
from decisive fourth goal. I make no attempt to justify or explain this 
type of behaviour but would point out three things.  Firstly; very few 
players climb to the top of world football without a certain degree of 
arrogance – a belief that they are the best. The petulance and 
impatience with team-mates is an unfortunate symptom of this belief. 
Secondly, Ronaldo spent six years at United and his behaviour very 
seldom resulted in any detriment to the team or club. Thirdly; Real 
Madrid is rife with a culture that encourages a larger-than-life 
God-like perception of the individual. It’s understandable that Ronaldo 
(who had narcissistic tendencies anyway) would embrace this entirely as 
the main star at the most successful club in the world. Five years 
later, having achieved everything possible in Madrid, it seems he is 
ready to move on. Were he merely seeking another pay-day he could surely
 find greener pastures than Old Trafford. This smacks more of a desire 
to return home to a club that holds a deep emotional connection for him,
 and one would expect that the “superstar” behaviour so central to his 
time at Madrid would be turned down a notch too.<br />

Undoubtedly financing a move for Ronaldo would result in a 
significant outlay, potentially in the region of the £59million spent 
for Angel Di Maria this summer. His wages will no doubt make the eyes 
water too.  In short, I don’t see this being a concern. It’s not our 
money at play here and the club has the financial muscle to secure 
Ronaldo along with the central defender and central midfielder we need. 
Of course the club must set a limit of what they can conceivably pay for
 a player with limited resale value but any price paid is sure to pale 
in comparison to the money our beloved owners have already taken from 
the club. As long as the money is being paid in then so be it!<br />

In terms of his arrival hindering the progression of Adnan Januzaj, 
one need only take a look at the state of our squad and the lack of 
strength in depth to see that this won’t be an issue. As it stands, we 
have just two players (Januzaj and Di Maria) that can actually play well
 as a winger and if we make the return to Europe as expected there will 
be far more games to play next season. Sheer amount of games and lack of
 competition on the flanks will see Januzaj get more than his fair share
 of games. If his ambition is to play through the middle then it is 
Mata, not Ronaldo that will prove the biggest obstacle in the prodigious
 attacker’s path to first team football. If anything, the presence of 
our returning hero will benefit Januzaj. A chance to learn from a player
 who has won it all and reached the very pinnacle of the game. A player 
who has made the journey from skilful yet inconsistent winger to  world 
beater and surpassing all expectations. Ronaldo’s arrival would benefit 
all parties involved.<br />

If United secured Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford it would be a 
spectacular coup for the club. We would be securing a player with many 
miles left in the tank who can still perform a level above most players 
in the league. It would represent a serious statement of intent from 
United to return to the top of European football, let alone the domestic
 game. We would be securing a player who knows the club inside and out 
and has a genuine love for the shirt, a player who would demand the best
 from his peers and brings a wealth of experience at the highest level. 
He would be a role model for our younger players regarding the 
importance of training, practice and a dedication to preparation. He 
would immediately improve our first team and would most likely be the 
difference in whether we win the title next year or not. The benefits 
for the club are many. For the player himself, it’s a chance to return 
to a family club where he still has many friends, where he could be 
happy again and play in front of fans who adore him. A chance to play a 
key role in restoring the Reds to their rightful place. A chance to add 
to his already sterling record and be remembered not only as an icon but
 as a true legend.<br />

A chance to come home.<br />

If a return to Old Trafford is truly on the cards for Ronaldo, the 
club would be misguided to the point of negligent if they didn’t make a 
serious effort to bring him back. In these situations it’s natural for 
us fans to protect ourselves, dismissing the possibility and attempting 
to justify why we “don’t need him” anymore. We’ve been burned before, 
after all. Nevertheless, I implore you to take a look back at our games 
between 2006 and 2009 and compare them to anything we’ve seen since. For
 that free-kick against Portsmouth. For the outrageous strike against 
Porto. For the decimation of Arsenal in the Champions League. For 
everything he did as the figurehead of the team in the most successful 
period in our history. It’s time to put aside the few negatives involved
 for the sake of everything he has done and could do for our club.<br />

Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren 
admits he has not found it easy to make an instant impact as manager 
Brendan Rodgers’ defensive linchpin.<br />

The Croatia international was signed at considerable cost –
 £20million – from Southampton as the Reds boss viewed him as a 
long-term replacement to fill the void left by Jamie Carragher’s 
retirement in 2013.<br />

Lovren has played every minute of Liverpool’s four Premier 
League matches this season but so far they have managed just one clean 
sheet, in the 3-0 win at Tottenham.<br />

He has had a mixed start to his Anfield career and 
Saturday’s defeat by Aston Villa came partly as a result of his poor 
marking at a corner.<br />

But it is still early days and Lovren is confident he can grow into the player Rodgers wants him to be.<br />

“It is a tough job because I am a new player also,” he said.<br />

“It is not so easy to lead all the time. I was used to 
other players leading before but I have the confidence in myself and I 
am ready for it.<br />

“I am just 25 and the thing is I need to improve in every game as a person and as a player.<br />

“I am giving my best, which is the most important thing. With the time and the games it will come.”<br />

Liverpool have kept just two clean sheets in their last 13 
Premier League outings and Rodgers admits it is an area they need to 
improve.<br />

“We need to be better in those areas,” he admitted.<br />

“Of course we were disappointed at the weekend. It was a 
game where when you dominate with the ball (they had 75 per cent 
possession) and don’t score you at least want to get a point.<br />

“We had five players making their Anfield debut at the weekend and that cohesion does take that little bit of time.<br />

“Our emphasis will always be positive but we need to tighten up in some areas.”<br />

Liverpool make their return to the Champions League on Tuesday night with the visit of Ludogorets.<br />

Rodgers said their scouting of the Bulgarian minnows had 
revealed they were an open side but they may – as Villa did so 
successfully at the weekend – come to Anfield with a plan to frustrate.<br />

The Reds boss insists his side are set up to cope with that.<br />

“Their normal game in Bulgaria, the club’s emphasis is to play attacking football,” he said.<br />

“They may want to come here and sit back of course, which is fine as a tactic but we only worry about ourselves.<br />

“We are used to starting games quickly at Anfield but it is
 also vital if we don’t get a goal in those early moments we don’t 
concede.”<br />

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Eden Hazard is in discussions with the club over a new contract.<br />

The Blues have tied down the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Thibaut 
Courtois to new long-term deals in recent weeks, and Hazard appears to 
be next in line.<br />

Mourinho said: “We have big hopes that he will go from a top player to reach higher levels.<br />

“He’s a player we want to keep. It’s true Chelsea is trying to have an agreement for a new contract.<br />

“It will be a question of time. It will end with a new contract. He 
wants to commit to us and we want to commit to him for the future.”<br />

Hazard has three years left to run on his current deal, but the 
Belgium international is likely to be offered a pay-rise and a new 
five-year contract to reward him for his progress and make him as 
unattainable as possible for would-be buyers.<br />

French champions Paris Saint Germain have previously been strongly linked with a move for Hazard.

Hazard is poised to put pen to paper on a new £200,000 a week deal at 
Chelsea in the next few weeks, after top scoring with 17 goals last 
season.<br /><br />The 23-year-old Belgian World Cup star has started this 
season in scintillating fashion as well, as Chelsea have won their first
 four games of the campaign to shoot to the top of the Premier League 
table.<br /><br />But, as his team prepared to face Schalke tomorrow in 
their opening Champions League match, Mourinho said: "Eden means a lot 
to us because he's a fantastic player. We are seeing day by day his 
motivation to work hard and improve.<br /><br />"We have big hopes that he

Benik Afobe continued to be a great goal scoring force for MK Dons. He

Ryo finally made his FC Twente debut this past weekend. The Japanese international came on in the 70<sup>th</sup> minute in FC Twente’s 2-1 win over the Go Ahead Eagles.<br />

Carl Jenkinson also made his West Ham debut on Monday against Hull City,
 coming back from a lengthy injury. He had a quiet game in a very 
exciting match to watch. In the 14 minutes the England-international was
 on, he completed four passes, completed one tackle, and one ball 
recovery.<br />
