The effectiveness of new rules regarding concussions to players has been questioned by a leading brain injury association after Thibaut Courtois was allowed to play on for 15 minutes following a blow to the head.
The Chelsea goalkeeper collided with Alexis Sanchez during the game against Arsenal on Sunday, and appeared to lose consciousness for a short while after the incident.
Chelsea’s medical team assessed Courtois and deemed him fit to play on, but the Belgian was substituted 15 minutes later after he started to bleed from the ear.
It follows a number of high-profile incidents involving suspected concussions to players in which no immediate action was taken.
The FA and Premier League responded this summer by introducing laws stating “if there is any suspicion of the player having sustained a concussion, they must be removed from the field of play, and not allowed to return”.
