Most snakes do the first. They have no limbs to tear food apart and have an incredible ability to swallow food whole, even if it is much larger than them. </div>

But there are some exceptions. New research has found that one particular species of blindsnake (<em>Indotyphlops braminus</em>) breaks the head off its termite prey before swallowing the rest of its body.</div>

First, the snake swallows the termite's body while its head remains outside the snake's mouth. The snake then rubs the termite's head against a surface – in this case its cage – until its head is separated from its body. This sequence of events can be seen in the photo below.</div>

It swallows the rest of the termite after its head is disconnected. This process only takes three seconds and the decapitated heads are left uneaten. </div>

Occasionally these small snakes will even regurgitate a termite after swallowing it whole. Only then will it decapitate it before swallowing it again.</div>

The research, <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/jzo.12268" style="background: 0px 0px; color: black; font-weight: 700; text-decoration: none;">published in the <em>Journal of Zoology</em></a><em>,</em>discovered that the snakes only decapitated their termite meals about half the time.</div>

This is an unusual feeding behaviour for a snake and was completely unexpected, says lead author of the study Takafumi Mizuno of the Kyoto Institute of Technology in Japan.</div>

It did not take longer to eat a decapitated termite instead of swallowing one whole. The researchers therefore propose two reasons why the snakes may be doing so at least some of the time.</div>

The heads contain toxic chemicals which could be bad news for the snake. The reptiles may therefore leave the termites' heads to avoid swallowing these unpleasant toxic compounds.</div>

But those that do swallow them appear unaffected. The termite heads remain undigested. They come out the other end in the same physical state. So perhaps foregoing the heads saves space in a snake's gut.</div>

Blindsnakes will always try to decapitate termites, says Mizuno, but it can be difficult for them to do so. "As a consequence decapitation rate are about 50%."</div>

Though tearing food apart before eating it is rare, blind snakes are not the only ones to do so. Two species of Asian crab-eating snake break the legs off their prey before eating them.  </div>

The blindsnake and the crab-eating snakes are genetically very different. They are separated by a common ancestor which lived 100 million years ago. This prey-tearing behaviour could therefore have evolved independently in these two lineages, the team proposes.</div>

What we don't know about these snakes could fill an entire library, says <a href="http://www.biology.usu.edu/htm/our-people/graduate-students/memberID=6753" style="background: 0px 0px; color: black; font-weight: 700; text-decoration: none;">Andrew Durso</a> at Utah State University, US, who was not involved with the research.</div>

It could also be present in many of the other 400 species of blindsnake, becoming another unusual habit they can add to their name. They are also the only known snake where all species are female. That is, they are parthenogens, they have<a href="http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20141219-spectacular-real-virgin-births" style="background: 0px 0px; color: black; font-weight: 700; text-decoration: none;">virgin births</a>.</div>

Because Greece is on the euro -- a currency used by 19 countries -- it doesn't set the value of its money. So it can't turn to an age-old response by countries with too much debt: devaluation. Devaluation means using the levers of finance to make money worth less. When money is devalued, the cost of debt goes down.</div>

Bankruptcy is also not an option for Greece. Companies deep in the red can ask a judge to help them get lenders to accept less than they are owed. There is no bankruptcy court for countries.</div>

The other way a country can get rid of debt is if the economy grows. But Greece owes so much compared to the size of its economy, it would take a miracle for that to work anytime soon.</div>

Leaders of Tsipras' political opposition disagree and argue that an "Oxi" vote will only tell the rest of Europe that Greece doesn't want to be part of the eurozone anymore. The vote could lead to a change in government.</div>

At this point, exiting the eurozone and going back to Greece's old currency, the drachma, would be very disruptive. The value of the money people have in their pockets (and banks) would decline. Prices would go way up. Life could get even worse.</div>

This year’s Virgin Money London Marathon to be officially started by Joyce Smith, Dick Beardsley and Inge Simonsen</h2>
The inaugural champions of the London Marathon are to officially start the 35th anniversary race on April 26.<br />

Three and a half decades after winning the first ever London Marathon
 on March 29, 1981, Dick Beardsley, Inge Simonsen and Joyce Smith will 
return to London to send some 36,000 Virgin Money London 
Marathon participants on their 26.2-mile journey to Westminster.<br />

USA’s Beardsley and Norway’s Simonsen famously crossed the rain-swept
 1981 finish line hand-in-hand, a gesture which has come to symbolise 
the spirit of the event and will be celebrated this year. Neither had 
won a marathon before and the winning time of 2:11:48 was a personal 
best for both.<br />

Eighteen minutes later and Smith won the first women’s race by a huge
 nine-minute margin. Clocking 2:29:57 she became the first British woman
 and the first woman over 40 to complete the distance in less than two 
and a half hours.<br />

The three victors were followed across the finish line, then on Constitution Hill, by 6252 other runners.<br />

All three inaugural champions went on to enjoy further success. Smith
 returned to win the event again a year later, this time by five and a 
half minutes in 2:29:43 for another British record. At 44 years and 195 
days she remains the oldest woman to have ever won the event.<br />

Simonsen went on to run the New York City Marathon later on in 
1981 and was sixth in the Golden Marathon in Athens in 1982, while 
Beardsley continued to set personal bests – acquiring a successive 
string of 13 marathon PBs in all – a Guinness World Record that still 
stands. At the 1982 Boston Marathon he was involved in a famous ‘duel in
 the sun’ with Alberto Salazar, which he lost by a mere two seconds in 
2:08:53, as both men bettered the previous course record and US record.<br />
